StockWatch: SP Cole Hamels
Cole Hamels, the Rangers’ co-ace along with Yu Darvish, has been one of fantasy’s most consistent pitchers for the past decade, but at age 33 and with his walk rate rising to a career-high 3.5 BB/9 last year, there are warning signs. Besides all the wear and tear of eight 200-inning seasons in the past nine years, Hamels is saddled by a hitter’s ballpark in the AL that saw him post a 4.40 ERA at home last season.
We aren’t projecting the wheels to come off just yet, but we have him pegged for rather mediocre 3.61 ERA and 1.27 WHIP marks. Together with 14 wins and 196 strikeouts, we still have Hamels as a very solid pitcher at No. 27 in our SP rankings, but he’s going for a higher price tag. Fantasy Pros has Hamels at No. 20 in its expert consensus ranking and No. 19 in its ADP. We’d much rather have Hamels as a No. 3 starter in a standard mixed league, but he’s going as a No. 2.
