Drafting Padres Hitters for Fantasy Baseball
So the Padres – yes I said the Padres – have acquired a slew of All-Star and MVP caliber players in the span of a week, completely changing the dynamic of MLB’s worst offense. For real baseball, that should translate into more victories if their pitching continues to shine. And since they play at Petco Park, the pitching should continue to shine.
But since they play at Petco Park, will their new offensive stars perform for fantasy baseball teams?
Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and even Derek Norris are still ranked well in the RotoAce rankings and projections. Wil Myers enters his third MLB season at age 24 as one of the best young talents in the game, and both he and Norris pull a lot of their home runs to left field. Right-handed power plays well in San Diego, but the team hasn’t employed any premium right-handed power in their new ballpark for some crazy reason. Until now.
The Padres acquired Kemp and Upton with plenty of knowledge about their career statistics in Petco Park.

Not exactly numbers to hang your head about. In fact, they’re pretty darn good.
So GM A.J. Preller knows these guys can hit there and knows that as long as he’s acquiring premium talent, that it should play anywhere. Myers and Norris have never played there, but are good, young hitters who should do well in an improved lineup. The question remains: Where should you draft these guys?
RotoAce currently ranks Upton (#11 OF) and Kemp (#27) as starting fantasy outfielders in 12-team leagues with three OF spots, while Wil Myers (#54) makes the cut in 12-team leagues with 5 OF spots. Let’s take a look at that projected 2015 lineup according to our position rankings:
C Derek Norris: RotoAce #16 with projected .739 OPS
OF Justin Upton: RotoAce #11 with projected .818 OPS
OF Matt Kemp: RotoAce #27 with projected .799 OPS
OF Wil Myers: RotoAce #54 with projected .745 OPS
Certainly don’t shy away from Kemp or Upton in fantasy drafts, and we would advise taking a shot with Myers as Norris as well.
