Jeff Keppinger (6%) just keeps doing the one thing he does best – hit for average. The Astros’ second baseman went 3-for-3 with a homer on Sunday, raising his average to .336. Keppinger is 17-for-42 in his past 10 games with six multi-hit performances. Because he has just two homers and no steals, Keppinger is more of an NL-only guy, but he can help out in deep mixed leagues too.

Ricky Romero (90%) hurled a four-hit shutout with two walks and five strikeouts against the Cardinals on Sunday. Romero has given up just three earned runs in his past three starts covering 24 innings with 21 strikeouts. His 2.74 ERA and 1.16 WHIP are both big improvements on last year’s breakout, as Romero is taking his place among the elite starting pitchers in all of baseball. (more…)

StockWatch: Sunday, June 5

Stock Up

David Ortiz (89%) is turning back the clock to 2007, when last he was an MVP-caliber force in Boston’s lineup. He was 3-for-4 on Sunday and is 12-for-22 with two homers and six RBIs in his past six games to raise his average to .325. It’s a good sign to see Ortiz not off to the horrid starts that have plagued him in recent seasons, so it’s not unreasonable to expect him to keep this up.

Adam Lind (88%) came off the DL and picked up right where he left off, going 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. Despite missing four weeks with a bad back, Lind has nine homers and 30 RBIs to give the Blue Jays a terrific 1-2 punch in the middle of their lineup with Jose Bautista. (more…)

StockWatch: Thursday, June 2

Yahoo for our ownership percentages are in parentheses. From the games of Thursday, June 2.

Stock Up

Aubrey Huff (59%) hit three home runs, making it four homers in two days after not hitting one since May 8. Now nobody is suggesting that he’s going to go all Jose Bautista on us, but he did go on a power binge last June and July, hitting 14 of his 26 home runs in those two months alone. He might be beginning one of those hot streaks and is worth an add in most leagues to find out.

Neil Walker (89%) hit his seventh home run and is in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak. Walker looks like he is going to do even better than last season’s numbers, as he is just five homers from matching the 12 he hit in 2010 and also has 37 RBIs already (66 last season). (more…)

Stock Up

Jay Bruce (97%) was 2-for-4 with a homer and is on a Troy Tulowitzki-caliber hot streak. Bruce had 11 RBIs in the four-game series with the Phillies and is 17-for-35 with six homers and 14 RBIs in his past eight games. Having just turned 24, Bruce is entering his prime years and promises to be one of the game’s premier power hitters for the next decade.

Carl Crawford (98%) is finally back, collecting four hits on Thursday and going 8-for-9 with five runs, five extra-base hits and five RBIs in the past two days combined. Now if only Red Sox manager Terry Francona would return to his senses and put Crawford back in the three-hole. (more…)

StockWatch: Wednesday, May 25

Yahoo for our ownership percentages are in parentheses. From games of Wednesday, May 25.

Stock Up

Erik Bedard (36%) continued his hot tear, going six scoreless innings against the Twins with four strikeouts and one walk. Bedard began the season 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA, but he is 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA and a 28-7 K-BB ratio in 33 IP since then. Bedard should be owned and started in all leagues.

Franklin Gutierrez (6%) was 2-for-3 with a homer and has a modest four-game hitting streak after going 0-for-8 in his first two games off a long DL stint with stomach problems. It was good to see Gutierrez attempting a steal even though he was caught, as he can be a solid source of both SBs and HRs when he gets going. (more…)

Stock Up

Jason Bartlett (5%) led the Padres’ 23-hit attack by going 4-for-6 with two steals and hitting two RBI singles in an eight-run eighth inning against the Brewers. Bartlett is 8-for-15 in his past three games to raise his average to .256 and now has seven steals. It’s not a coincidence that Bartlett’s three-game uprising has come at the start of a road trip away from Petco Field, where he’s hitting .164 compared to .344 on the road. If you’re looking for steals, grab Bartlett and try to use him for road games. (more…)

ADD OF THE DAY: FRANK FRANCISCO (46%) is ready to reclaim the Blue Jays closer’s job he was supposed to have this year before starting the season on the DL – his home away from home. Jon Rauch blew his first save of the season while filling in for Francisco, opening the door for the former Rangers’ closer by surrendering a game-winning homer to B.J. Upton. Francisco hasn’t been scored on in five appearances, giving up just two hits in 5.1 IP. If someone had given up waiting for Francisco to take back the closer’s job, snatch him up now.

Mike Fontenot (1%) had a steal and two RBIs from the three-hole in the Giants’ lineup as he started at shortstop with Miguel Tejada moving over to third base to fill in for the injured Pablo Sandoval. Fontenot is 7-for-20 over the past week, but he’s more of an NL-only pickup for his multi-position eligibility (2B and 3B, with SS coming soon) and the ABs he’ll likely get while Sandoval’s out. ADD OF THE DAY: MADISON BUMGARNER (54%) fell to 0-5, but he lowered his ERA to 4.75 by going seven innings without allowing any earned runs (two unearned) against the Nationals. In his past two starts covering 13 innings, Bumgarner has a 14-2 K-BB ratio with a 0.69 ERA. It’s time to snatch up the young lefty if he was dropped in your league.

Jacoby Ellsbury (93%) went 2-for-4 with three runs and two steals, raising his average to .275 from .182 with an 11-game hitting streak. Just when Ellsbury is hitting his stride, he left Monday’s game with a bruised knee. Assuming his knee is fine, Ellsbury should be back in all lineups. (more…)

Stock Spotlight: Ryan Vogelsong

This is our Stock Spotlight series, where we plan to give owners an inside look at potential fantasy baseball sleepers to help you dominate your fantasy baseball league. Click here for today’s StockWatch

Ryan Vogelsong made his first major-league appearance since 2006 against the team he last pitched for, the Pirates, and struck out eight in 5.2 innings.

Vogelsong came up with the Giants in 2000 and was sent to Pittsburgh in the Jason Schmidt deal the following year. Now 33 years old, Vogelsong still has good velocity for a lefty, averaging 91 mph on his fastball. He was out of professional baseball from 2007-09, but he has returned as more of a strikeout pitcher. (more…)
