J.D. Martinez (6%) is doing his best to make Astros fans get over trading away Hunter Pence, going 2-for-4 on Tuesday with his fourth homer in his past six games. During that six-game stretch, Martinez is 9-for-24 with seven runs and 11 RBIs.
Martinez has been a revelation after being just a 20th-round pick out of Nova Southeastern in 2009.
After hitting a combined .348 in his first season in the minors, Martinez batted a combined .341 with 18 homers last year between High-A and Double-A. He was back in Double-A Corpus Christi this season, batting .338 with 13 homers, before making the jump to Houston on July 30.
Martinez may not have been a highly-rated prospect coming out of an obscure college, but his scintillating minor-league performance has put him on the map and his powerful past week in Houston is making him a fantasy sensation and among the hottest fantasy baseball prospects.
Martinez, who turns 24 on Aug. 21, has shown an improved batting eye this season, drawing 42 walks against 55 strikeouts in 317 ABs at Double-A. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound outfielder has demonstrated his power and he has shown he can hit for average in the minors, so Martinez could be a difference-maker down the stretch in deep leagues and someone to snatch up in keeper leagues.
